The fifth installment of the long running Call of Duty series returns to World Word II along with developer Treyarch at the helm. Does it live up to the Call of Duty name or should it be stuck with a Bayonet… Let’s take a look at Call of Duty: World at War…..
Well what can you say? It’s another Call of Duty game, which necessarily isn’t a bad thing at all. After taking a departure from World War II in COD4, this time we follow Private Miller U.S. Marine Corps and Private Dimitri Petrenko of the Soviet Army. As with all the previous Call of Duty games, the single player story is superb, the writing team has really outdone themselves.
The graphics are very crisp at 1080p utilizing a modified version of the Call of Duty 4 engine. The environment is more destructible and the ability to set things on fire with the flamethrower makes the inner pyromaniac in me happy. Hiding behind wooden objects isn’t always safe as you can shoot holes through them.
COD4 finally brought the multiplayer mode up to the level of the single player modes, which was lack luster in previous versions. World at War has taken the perk system from COD4 and also added for the first time ever in the series, a coop mode with 2 player split-screen and 4 player online. There is also a coop mode that is unlocked when completing the single player mode which pits you and a buddy against hordes of Zombie Nazis, how cool is that?
Perhaps the only issue that I experienced when playing the game was that the A.I. for your squad mates in singleplayer still need some work. In a lot of missions I watched as an enemy would walk through many of my squadmates without them as much as trying to shoot at him, only to make his way straight for me. Normally I wouldn’t notice except I kept getting killed from behind because I was preoccupied with something else. After frustration, I started to wait and watch for this enemy and discovered this anomaly.
If you are a Xbox 360 owner, there is a collectors edition available that includes a metal case, unlock codes for weapons in multiplayer, opportunity for double XP in multiplayer and special clan tags. A very good deal if you ask me.
There is Trophy support for those who own a PS3 and overall they are fairly easily attained. There is a complete listing here.
I would highly recommend picking this title up, whether you are a long standing fan of the series or new to it.
