The Essential PS3

The latest installment in our ‘Essential’ series, we take a look at the five Playstation 3 games that you MUST own if you have Sony’s black monolith sitting in your home theater.

Check the entire story inside.

Whether you’re into Action, First-Person Shooters, Platforming, or Multiplayer, there’s a game for you on the PS3.

Want a list? Of course you do.

5. Ratchet And Clank Future: Tools Of Destruction

Insomniac Games, and more particularly the Ratchet and Clank series have always set a high water mark for gaming quality and production values. The first in the series to land on the Playstation 3 is no exception. From remarkably funny dialog and cutscenes, to over the top action and explosions, Tools of Destruction never fails to entertain, and always reminds you how far hardware has progressed this generation. Of particular note are the varied and inventive weapons; you’ll laugh out loud at some of the destructive effects and you’ll appreciate the explosive power of more traditional firearms.

Although there is nothing new here in the way of gameplay or narrative, it’s traditional 3D platforming at it’s best.

4. Resistance: Fall Of Man

Another entry on the list from Insomniac Games, this is the consumate FPS for the platform. Deep story driven narrative, immaculate controls, and a rich suite of multiplayer options, this game oozes replayability. One of the most satisfying gaming experiences I’ve had… all five times I’ve played through the single player mode.

3. Warhawk

Continuously updated, constantly evolving, and unapologetically difficult, this multiplayer only fragfest packs an insane amount of depth and configuration options.

Whether you’re looking to kill 15 minutes or lose a weekend, you’ll find yourself coming back to this title again and again.

2. Heavenly Sword

Although some have given this game a failing grade because of it’s admittedly short playing time, the 6 or 7 hours you spend finishing the experience is well worth the price of admission. With it’s new lower ‘greatest hits’ price, you have no excuse; this game must be played. The cinematic sequences rival many Hollywood features, the voice acting is top-notch, and the action has a simple learning curve but is difficult to master. Several playthroughs are needed to truly appreciate the title.

If you like ‘God Of War’ on PS2, this game will fill the void in your collection for PS3.

1. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots

A technological tour-de-force. Nothing else comes close. Let me say that again: nothing else comes close. Harkening back to gameplay mechanics that made the 8 bit Nintendo era good, but with today’s hardware backing it, Kojima’s masterpiece is unrivalled on ANY platform. The original stealth/action title is still the best. Period.
