Blu-ray Review – Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Season 1)

blu_sarah_connorI was excited to see this show when I first saw commercials for it on Fox. Unfortunately, a mishap with the DVR made it impossible to watch anything after the pilot episode. So I was even more excited to get it on Blu-ray for a really good price. So was the purchase worth the money spent? Keep reading to find out.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles follows in the footsteps of the movies, following the events of Terminator 2: Judgement Day. In 1999, Sarah and John are on the run again, this time with the help of a re-programmed terminator named Cameron. In the pilot episode, they make a leap to the year 2007 to again try to stop Skynet and stop the war before it starts.

I’ve always been a fan of the Terminator series, and this tv series stays true to the movies. It’s a good continuation of the overall story of the terminators. The characters are incredible. Lena Headey plays Sarah Connor in a way reminiscent of Linda Hamilton in the movies, making the transition between actresses less of an annoyance. Summer Glau makes an excellent terminator, blending in as a human, but with the unsurity any robot would feel. Also in the cast are Thomas Dekker as John and Richard T. Jones as an FBI agent trying to track them down to put Sarah back in the mental hospital.

Special features for the blu-ray include commentaries by Executive Producer Josh Friedman and cast/crew, “terminated” scenes, a 3-part look at creating the series, a storyboard animatic, a gag reel, cast audition tapes for 3 of the 4 main characters, Summer Glau’s dance rehearsal, and an extended cut of Episode 7. While none of these really add much to the show, they are fun to watch.

So was the series worth a buy? If you’re a fan of the movies, this is a fun addition to the series. Go buy it. It’s fairly cheap, and it’s fun to watch. Was it worth the cost of blu-ray? Having seen the quality of this on a non-HD broadcast, I’d say the extra money is worth it. It’s really not that much more than DVD, and it looks really good in hi-def.
