Game Review: Astro Tripper (PSN)

With the list of PSN games growing rapidly every week, you find yourself wondering which games are worth your time and money. Astro Tripper finally hit the U.S. store today. Keep reading if you wanna know if it’s any good.

When Matt gave you the trophy list back in January, we really didn’t know much about the new PSN title from PomPom Games. After getting a chance to try it out today, I learned a couple of things. First of all the game is incredibly difficult. Secondly, the game is addictingly fun. Astro Tripper is another in the long list of shoot-em-up games. Basically, you travel back and forth across a horizontally scrolling platform and shoot everything that moves.

Gameplay includes two modes: Adventure and Challenge. In Adventure mode, you work through 14 levels spanning across 4 worlds. You start off with 3 lives and gain an additional live every 1 million points. Defeat all the enemies before the timer runs out to complete each level. On Easy, you’re given a barrier around the edge so you don’t fall off. Jump up to Hard and Hardest and you no longer have that barrier so be careful not to fall off. Challenge mode is even more difficult. Work through 4 levels just like before, only this time you’re limited to one life. And you don’t get to pick the difficulty.

So is it worth a buy? Like the old Space Tripper game? Definitely grab this game! Astro Tripper is an evolved version of the game made by the same company. If you’re looking for a fun, simple shooter game to spend a little bit of time with, the $4.99 price tag isn’t bad. If you’re looking for a more serious game, this probably isn’t for you.
